How your elearning skills can help alleviate poverty

Posted in Uncategorized by Cathy Moore on 15 October 2008

Want to make a difference outside your company? The United Nations connects online volunteers with non-governmental organizations around the world. All you need is some time and an internet connection.

Man and boy use laptop outdoors in UgandaA quick search of the opportunities at the UNV Online Volunteering site turned up several projects that might need you. Here’s a sampling:

Create a short online cartoon: The Child Rehabilitation Centre of Sri Lanka needs a short cartoon to communicate what they do and attract donors and volunteers.

Train teachers online: Gwalior Children’s Hospital helps the poor and disabled of the Gwalior and Chambal regions in India. They have a school and hospice for children with profound learning disabilities; they need teachers to help train their staff online.

Support Drupal and CiviCRM: The Aid Workers Network in the UK needs someone with CMS experience to help with technical issues and work on special programming projects.

Write university-level courses: PEOI is an ambitious project to provide free online courses around the world.

Edit online materials: The Borgen Project is working to bring attention to global poverty and the U.N. Millennium Development Goals. They need a strong editor for their website.

Help raise funds for a telecentre in Cameroon: Techcefacos needs people to help locate donors of funds and equipment for a computing center in the Tobin-Kumbo region of Cameroon.

That’s just a sampling. See more by searching the opportunities here.

The world is built on the injustice , imbalance of power ,those who are bestowed with good brain are leading the world fairly or unfairly , but we should not resign …….

Let us fight ,fight but not like Mc cain (defeated Prsdnt of US)…..sorry let us think , think rationally , use our brain and use our mind , what we can do , since we are in need of doing something , some thing positive , something constructive , something which will release the misery , the destress and anxiety of our people , anxiety of the world.

God is just but the world is unjust , they may be many talented people, unfortunatelly they are not and they will not be given any chance to talk or to act ……

Allow me to quote this Scholar who said ….”Knowledge exists potentially in the human soul like a seed in the soil; by the learning the potential becomes actual.” (Al-Ghazali ,1972)

So you experts and naturally talented people answer my questions :
Do we need to teach people how to think?
    Isn’t thinking a natural process?
Do we need to learn how to think?
Is it possible to teach people to think more efficiently?

Humans are unique in their capacity for thinking and choosing; other animals operate on the basis of instincts. Humans have a capacity for self-awareness and for thinking themselves into and out of difficulties.

So let us think what we can do , there is a problem of more than 40 years , Why African Continent remain behind the Rest of the world ?

Since 40 years developed world claim that there are trying to eradicate poverty in africa , but no any success in any part of that continent . I quote again Gordon Brown( UK Prime Minister):” Let make poverty history in Africa “……. what’s wrong ? what’s the matter ? think and think and think again , ….. But it time resolve the problem …..How ? what to do ? How to do ?…..please experts help me……..help us…..it’s too late ….. we need to act.

Sorry , forgive my day dream , but hope a genuine dream can become true.

Best Regards for all of you who advocate Human development and World development.

I am badly to be among those who help for sustenable development particularly agricultural and environmental sectors. What to do ?

  8. on November 18th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

    Dear Mr Kakale,

You are right , full support to you , developed nations are cheating the third world countries, through their neo-liberal ,free trade ideology , for me is just a strategy to maintain resources flowing from developing to developed countries.

Practically what we observe nowdays insead of ruling by the gun like it was the case durung the colonization , it became rule by trade policy whereby so called “free trade ” is used as ideology to continue to maintain colonial economic relations with the developing world .

In simple words , to get the market of their industrial products while taking at cheaper cost the raw material of the less industrialised countries, which will be soldback to them at exhorbitant price.

As consequence, the real beneficiaries from current trade liberalization are rich countries while make the poor poorer and put many out of work .

What to do ? answer = ask african leaders .

Who knows ? answer = ask EU and US under their ” Chien mechant ” WTO.

Can we resign ??? NO !!! let us struggle , one day we will win.

Best regards to all supporters and those who advocate the development and alleviation of poverty of the entire world.

The UN volunteers organization has linked to this blog because I mentioned its activities. Unfortunately, this blog is about online training used in corporations and that’s my only expertise, so I’m unable to answer the preceding questions.

If you’re interested in using elearning (online education) in development, you might find help at the Facebook group called Elearning in Developing and Developed Countries. You can find it here:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=12471635541

Also, the annual eLearning Africa conference takes place 27-29 May in Dakar. According to its website, “Its mission is to bring people together who are actively engaged in education and in the implementation of learning technologies in schools, universities, corporate training as well as in education in the public sector.”

You can learn more about the conference here:
